How to Get a Job in the European Space Industry

You do not get a European space job by collecting logos or waiting until you feel ready. You get one by picking a real type of work, checking whether you are legally allowed to do it, translating your experience into that work, and applying to named vacancies like an adult.

That is the whole process. The rest of this guide is the map: which part of the industry you are actually joining, what tends to block people, and which of our deeper articles to read at each step.

First: Space in Europe Is Not One Industry

"Space job" covers building a satellite, writing the software that flies it, processing the images it sends back, winning the contract that funds it, and making sure the parts arrive on time. Those are different labour markets.

Two splits matter immediately.

Upstream vs downstream. Upstream is the hardware and the mission: launch, spacecraft, payloads, AIT, operations close to the vehicle. Downstream is what you do with the data and the service once something is in orbit: Earth observation products, navigation applications, connectivity, analytics. Hiring language is different in each. Upstream postings talk about ECSS, qualification, thermal-vacuum, GNC, and flight hardware. Downstream postings talk about pipelines, cloud, APIs, GIS, and customers who are not space agencies. We unpacked that choice in Upstream vs Downstream. If you are a software or data person who does not want to live in a cleanroom, downstream is usually the door.

Agency, prime, or scale-up. ESA and the large primes such as Airbus Defence and Space and Thales Alenia Space run long programmes, heavy process, and deep specialisation. You may own a narrow slice of a flagship mission and spend most of your time in analysis, reviews, and documentation. NewSpace companies such as ICEYE, Isar Aerospace, and The Exploration Company trade some of that depth for pace and breadth. You will see hardware fail in front of you. You will also live with technical debt. Neither is morally better. They are different headaches. Read Big Agency or Big Startup before you romanticise either.

Remote exists, but it is not the default. A lot of hardware, AIT, operations, and classified or export-controlled work is on-site or hybrid because the thing you are building is in a lab, a cleanroom, or a control room. If the posting is silent on location, assume you will be asked to be in the country, and often in the building, at least some of the week.

Check Eligibility Before You Invest Weeks

Nationality, export control, and clearance stop more applications than a missing Python library. They stop them early, often automatically.

ESA is not the European Union. The UK, Switzerland, and Norway are Member States. Canada participates as a Cooperating State. Some entry-level ESA programmes also accept nationals of European Cooperating States. The vacancy footer is the source of truth, not a LinkedIn comment.

Commercial companies vary. Purely commercial, especially downstream software and data, are more likely to sponsor. Defence-adjacent primes and anything touching ITAR or dual-use hardware are not. If a posting lists ITAR, EAR, security clearance, or "nationality of the hiring country" as a hard requirement and you do not meet it, move on. That is not a negotiation. It is a legal constraint the hiring manager cannot waive in a screening call.

Two practical habits help. First, read the eligibility line before the responsibilities. Second, if the company sells to ministries of defence or flies US-origin parts, assume the bar is higher than a generic tech visa. "ITAR-free" in a company's own messaging is a useful signal that they built the product to keep hiring and export options open.

Pick a Path That Matches Work You Can Point To

You do not need a five-year plan. You need a first honest fit.

Software. Flight software is C/C++, reliability, and standards. You cannot SSH in to patch a bug on orbit. Ground software looks like any serious backend or data platform, with satellites as the source: telemetry, scheduling, processing, APIs. You do not need an aerospace degree for most ground roles. You do need to show you have shipped systems that stay up, handle bad data, and can be operated by someone else at 3am. Details: Flight vs Ground: Software Roles.

Earth observation and data. One of the more open entries if you already do Python, GIS, ML, or a domain such as climate, agriculture, insurance, or maritime. The satellite is a sensor. The job is the product: maps, alerts, APIs, risk models. Cloud, messy labels, and explaining uncertainty to a non-technical buyer matter more than orbital mechanics. See Earth Observation Careers.

Hardware, AIT, propulsion, GNC. This is where space experience, or a close analogue from defence, aviation, or high-reliability manufacturing, still counts most. The hardware is expensive, slow, and unforgiving. Hands-on routes exist for technicians as well as engineers. We interviewed a propulsion AIT technician in Apurva's career spotlight.

Non-engineering. Project management, supply chain, product assurance, bids, finance, contracts, and business development keep programmes alive. They are chronically undersold in career advice and chronically hard to hire. If you have run a long programme, qualified suppliers, closed non-conformances, or won tenders in another regulated industry, you are closer than the usual narrative suggests. Translate What You Already Did

The most common waste of time is writing "no space experience" in the first line.

A buyer who managed semiconductor obsolescence, a PM who delivered a certified medical device, a backend engineer who ran on-call for a payments system, and a quality lead from automotive all have stories this industry understands: long lead times, one-shot hardware, evidence over assertion, regulated documentation.

How to Read a Space Job Description

Most postings look like they were written for one person who already works there. They are a mix of true must-haves, wish lists, leftover tool names, and signals about the problem the team cannot currently solve.

Must-haves in this sector tend to be tied to safety, export control, clearance, hands-on facilities, or immediate ownership. Years of experience and the exact CAD package are often softer than they look.

Applying: Named Vacancies, Not Vibes

There is no general "space CV inbox" that matters. ESA does not take speculative applications. Neither do most primes. You apply to a live vacancy, with a CV and a letter that map onto that vacancy.

For the Agency specifically, internships, graduate traineeships, junior professional posts, and staff vacancies are different doors on different calendars. Applying to the wrong one wastes a cycle. Everywhere else, the same rule holds: one tailored application beats ten generic ones. Name the team, the problem, and the work you have already done that maps onto it. A letter that could be swapped onto another vacancy will be read that way.

Research the company before you write. The company directory is there for that: what they build, where they hire, whether they have live roles. Ten minutes on the profile is cheaper than a vague "I am passionate about space" paragraph.

Interviews

There is no single loop. A five-person startup may compress everything into two calls. A prime or agency may run screening, hiring manager, technical, panel, and leadership, then wait on clearance.

What does not change: they are testing whether you can do the work with this team under these constraints. Prepare two or three projects in depth, including what went wrong. Ask what the technical stage will involve. Delays in regulated parts of the sector are often process, not a verdict.

Expect the technical stage to match the work. Software may be a take-home or a design conversation. Hardware and AIT are more likely to walk through test data, a failure, or a project that slipped. Non-engineering roles will still probe how you ran risk, a supplier, or a bid under a hard deadline. Asking what the format is, in advance, is a normal question.

What People Get Wrong

They treat ESA as the only employer. It is the most searched. It is not the whole market.

They treat every bullet on a job ad as a veto. Recruiters do not.

They hide the transfer. "I am new to space" is weaker than "I ran qualification on medical devices under ISO 13485 and I can learn ECSS."

They apply on the last evening of an ESA call and then cannot edit a typo.

They ignore non-engineering roles because career content is written by and for engineers.

They wait to feel ready. The people who move are usually slightly underqualified on paper and specific in the application.

Time, Entry Level, and Internships

"Entry level" in this sector is sloppy language. An ESA Graduate Trainee post wants a Master's, often already in the final year. A prime's junior engineer role may want a relevant internship or a student project that looks like AIT or GNC. A NewSpace company may hire a strong generalist with less space on the CV if you can show ownership.

Internships at ESA open around November and close after about a month. They are for enrolled Master's students. They are not a salary. They are a way in. If that is your window, the ESA article is the one to follow, not this paragraph.

Hiring loops are slower than consumer tech when export control, security, or a panel of busy engineers is involved. Two to three weeks at a small company is possible. One to three months at an agency or prime is common. Do not read silence as a no until the date they gave you has passed, then send one polite follow-up.

A Working Sequence

If you want an order instead of a pile of tabs:

  1. Decide upstream vs downstream, and agency vs company. Two articles, one afternoon.
  2. Check nationality and export-control constraints against the kind of role you want.
  3. Rewrite three bullets of your CV in the language of the destination industry.
  4. Pick five live vacancies. Decode the must-haves. Apply to the ones you can defend.
  5. If ESA is in the mix, pick the correct programme and calendar before you write anything.
  6. Prepare the interview from those same three projects, not from a generic competency list.
