Intern in the Galileo and EGNOS Programme Department - System Engineering Section
Location
EGNOS Project Office, Toulouse, France
Our team and mission
The EGNOS and SBAS Programme Division is responsible for the development of the EGNOS system and its qualification, in its role as Design and Procurement Agent, under the programme management of the European Commission (EC). Version 3 of the EGNOS system is currently under development and qualification.
The Division is also managing several research and development activities under the Horizon Europe and NAVISP Programmes and is supporting ASECNA in the procurement of the African SBAS.
The System Engineering Section of the GNSS Regional Augmentation System Division is responsible, in particular, for the following activities:
- ensuring the compliance of the system design with upper-level requirements (Mission & Performance, security, operations);
- developing and maintaining system engineering tools and associated databases;
- managing the corresponding industrial activities and ensuring that system engineering activities are performed according to agreed development plans, in compliance with the applicable system requirements, standards and system engineering requirements.
The Security Service of the EGNOS and SBAS Programme Division is responsible, in particular, for the following activities:
- establishing and maintaining the security baseline and security requirements for all releases procured by ESA;
- identifying and managing security issues;
- preparing security accreditation files for the ground segment;
- managing security activities within the EGNOS Project Office.
Candidates interested are encouraged to visit the ESA website: http://www.esa.int
Field(s) of activity for the internship
The EGNOS V3 System is composed of 39 Remote reference stations, 2 Main Control Centres (hosting in particular the central processing facilities) and 6 Uplink Stations connected to 3 EGNOS geostationary satellites, all interconnected through a dedicated real-time wide-area network.
EGNOS V3 design is the result of a complex multidisciplinary exercise implementing stringent performance, safety, security and operability requirements across several interconnected subsystems.
Based on this first EGNOS V3 version, an enhanced engineering approach is being implemented for the definition of EGNOS evolutions, typically including:
- enhanced modularity of the system design through a system-of-segments approach;
- parallel engineering of evolutions across different EGNOS system releases;
- multidisciplinary consolidation within and across segments;
- interactive incremental validation and report generation using AI.
You will be integrated into the System Engineering Section of the EGNOS and SBAS Division and will interact closely with the Security Service. You will also interact with other teams/disciplines (Product and Safety, Development and IVQ, Operations). You will develop, integrate and validate an EGNOS Engineering ToolKit aimig at demonstrating and providing an initial engineering capability in an integrated and shared environment including:
- a requirements engineering COTS tool;
- a Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) COTS tool;
- upgrading Internal AI agents and tools from previous activities to provide engineering support capabilities exploiting the current document-centric engineering approach (engineering artefact consistency checks, cybersecurity analysis, vulnerability and security patch identification, etc.) and extending these capabilities to cover standard security inventories;
- import/export functionalities to interface with external stakeholders.
To this goal, you will:
- consolidate the System Engineering Team and Security Team user needs;
- analyse available technical documentation and identify relevant information;
- select and justify the choice of OSS/COTS tools complementing the current selected System Engineering tools;
- design, develop, integrate and validate the EGNOS Engineering ToolKit;
- demonstrate the capability of the EGNOS Engineering ToolKit to conduct security and system engineering activities;
- document the user manual.
At the end of the internship, you will have contributed to an AI-assisted proof of concept demonstrating the capability to support security and system engineering activities.
