Staff Engineer / Senior Engineer – ALOMAR Observatory

Andøya Space is hiring an engaged engineer for the ALOMAR Observatory (Arctic Lidar Observatory for Middle Atmosphere Research) — an advanced research observatory for optical and radar-based remote sensing of the atmosphere. From the top of Ramnan, researchers study the Arctic atmosphere with LiDAR and radar instrumentation.
You will join the Ground-Based Instrumentation department (Sub-Orbital division). Normal weekday shifts are 08:00–16:00 and 15:00–01:00; campaign and summer periods may include night and weekend work. The role requires eligibility for Norwegian security clearance (Sikkerhetsloven).
Responsibilities
- Operate and maintain LiDAR, radar and other research instrumentation at ALOMAR
- Provide technical support to researchers, customers and internal teams
- Quality-assure, process and analyse measurement data, including satellite data
- Scientific and technical reporting to customers; contribute to research funding proposals (Research Council of Norway, EU, ESA and others)
- Participate in R&D projects, conferences and outreach
- Contribute to student courses and observatory tours
Qualifications
- Master's degree or equivalent in physics, atmospheric science, engineering or another relevant field
- Strong Python skills; other languages a plus
- Ability to perform independent scientific data analysis and write scientific reports from LiDAR/radar remote sensing, in-situ measurements and Earth-observation satellites
- Good written and oral Norwegian and English
- Experience with research funding applications and technical/project reporting
- Valid class B driving licence (manual); ability to drive safely to ALOMAR in demanding winter conditions
Desired
- Experience calibrating/validating Earth-observation satellites
- Experience maintaining LiDAR or radar systems
- Experience with large datasets, satellite data processing and statistical analysis
- Experience in Space Surveillance and Tracking (SST)
