PhD Student: Charged Particle Dynamics During Geomagnetic Reversals
Institution: University of Helsinki, Department of Physics, Space Physics Group
Location: Helsinki, Finland
Application deadline: December 1, 2025 (or until filled)
Start date: Flexible; can begin before doctoral study rights are finalized
Duration: 4 years (with a 6-month probationary period)
About the Role
The PhD project will explore charged particle dynamics in complex terrestrial magnetic field configurations during periods of geomagnetic field reversals and excursions. The work combines theoretical, computational, and modelling approaches to study space plasma behavior in evolving magnetic environments.
Requirements
Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Physics or a related field
Strong theoretical or computational skills
Background in space plasma physics (advantageous but not required)
Excellent academic record and motivation for doctoral research
Additional Information
Applicants must separately apply for doctoral study rights at the University of Helsinki:
Doctoral education application processEmployment may start before official study rights are granted but must be confirmed within the probationary period
Benefits
4-year fully funded PhD position
International, interdisciplinary research environment
Access to comprehensive university employee benefits (healthcare, sports, relocation support)
