PhD Researcher – Orbital Data Centers: System Architecture and Sustainability

Full-timeHybridEngineering

About the Role

Join us at the forefront of space innovation! We are seeking a motivated and ambitious PhD researcher to explore the groundbreaking field of Orbital Data Centers. This project aims to revolutionize in-space data processing by developing a system architecture model that evaluates the feasibility, sustainability, and viability of orbital data centers.

As part of this PhD, you will tackle challenges such as orbital dynamics, radiation, thermal management, and circular economy principles to design a sustainable space infrastructure. Your research will directly contribute to the National Space Strategy of Luxembourg and collaborate with leading industry players.

Key Research Objectives

  • Survey & Strategy: Identify value propositions and business cases for space-based computing.

  • Systems Modeling: Develop simulations for virtualization layers, power generation, orbital mechanics, and Quality-of-Service (QoS).

  • Sustainability & Circular Economy: Apply "Design for Re-" principles (refurbishing, recycling, and reusing data center elements) to minimize space debris.

  • Uncertainty Analysis: Model the impact of space weather, debris collisions, and radiation.

  • Case Studies: Evaluate scenarios in Low Earth Orbit (LEO), Geostationary Orbit (GEO), and Lunar computing.

Why Join Us?

  • Industry Impact: Collaborate with major space industry stakeholders and contribute to Luxembourg’s National Space Strategy.

  • Academic Excellence: Publish in top-tier journals (e.g., Acta Astronautica) and present at prestigious conferences (e.g., IEEE Aerospace).

  • Future-Proof Research: Shape the future of a sustainable and scalable space economy.

Qualifications

  • MSc in Space Systems Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related field.

  • Strong analytical and modeling skills.

  • Passion for space technology, sustainability, and innovation.

Application Details

  • Funding: This position is contingent on securing an individual grant (AFR) from the Fonds National de Recherche (FNR) Luxembourg.

  • Timeline: Funding decision expected in June 2026, with a prospective start date in late 2026/early 2027.
