The Max Planck Institute for Gravitational Physics (Albert Einstein Institute) was founded in 1995 in Potsdam, with a Hannover branch since 2002. About 400 staff work on gravitational-wave theory, LIGO/Virgo data analysis, and detectors such as GEO600 and LISA. AEI scientists were among the authors of the 2016 first detection of gravitational waves.
